Facing a rejuvenated McCain campaign, a fall in the polls, and a surprise named Sarah Palin, a battle-fatigued Barack Obama stumbled into September putting forth a confused message.
Appearing on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, Mr. Obama, in the course of his interview, mistakenly identified himself as a Muslim, issued a pseudo-mea culpa on abortion, and backpedaled on taxes and military spending.
Talking to host George Stephanopoulos, Mr. Obama explained how Republicans were trying to scare voters by convincing them he was not a Christian; a claim the McCain camp described as “cynical.”
When Mr. Stephanopoulos pointed out the McCain camp “has never suggested you have Muslim connections,” Mr. Obama’s response proved to be a gaffe that will surely set the Internet afire.
“Let’s not play games,” Mr. Obama said. “What I was suggesting – you’re absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. And you’re absolutely right that that has not come.”
Mr. Stephanopoulos immediately interjected by saying, “Christian faith,” and Mr. Obama made the correction.
